Privacy Policy

Matthew Flagler respects your privacy. This website only collects information that is necessary to respond to inquiries, manage the reader mailing list, keep the site secure, and make sure everything works reliably. I do not sell or rent personal information, and I do not use it for anything beyond the purposes described here.

Information We Collect

matthewflagler.ca may collect the following information:

  • An email address when you voluntarily sign up for the Join the Hunt mailing list.
  • Your name, email address, and message content when you use the Contact form.
  • Limited technical information needed for security, spam prevention, rate limiting, and reliable website operation. This may include your IP address, browser and device information, timestamps, and submission activity.

We do not currently collect demographic, financial, payment, precise-location, or health information.

How We Use Information

Information is used only for the following purposes:

  • Sending newsletters, book news, excerpts, release information, and related author updates to visitors who voluntarily subscribe.
  • Processing newsletter confirmation and unsubscribe requests.
  • Responding to messages sent through the Contact form.
  • Sending an automated acknowledgment confirming that a Contact form message was received.
  • Protecting the website and forms from spam, abuse, malicious submissions, and repeated automated activity.
  • Maintaining and improving reliable operation of the website.

Submitting the Contact form does not subscribe you to the newsletter.

Newsletter and MailerLite

The Join the Hunt mailing list is managed using MailerLite. Email addresses submitted through the newsletter form may be transmitted to and stored by MailerLite for the purpose of managing subscriptions and sending email communications.

Newsletter signup uses, or is intended to use, double opt-in. This means you must confirm your email address before becoming an active subscriber. You can unsubscribe at any time using the unsubscribe link included in every newsletter email.

MailerLite's privacy practices are described in their Privacy Policy.

Contact Form and Transactional Email

The Contact form is processed through the website's secure server-side email infrastructure, provided through Lovable and its associated service providers.

Contact form submissions are delivered to: matthew@matthewflagler.ca.

Your email address may be used as the reply-to address so Matthew can respond directly. An automatic confirmation email may be sent to you to acknowledge receipt of your message.

Contact form information is not automatically added to the newsletter database.

Spam Prevention and Security

The website uses reasonable anti-spam and security measures, including:

  • Server-side validation of all submissions.
  • Hidden honeypot fields to detect automated submissions.
  • Rate limiting to prevent abuse.
  • Validation of submitted email addresses.
  • Message-length restrictions.
  • Rejection of malicious HTML or script content.

Limited technical data may be processed temporarily to support these protections.

Cookies and Analytics

matthewflagler.ca does not currently use advertising cookies, behavioural advertising, tracking pixels, Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or similar tracking services.

The website may use only cookies or local storage that are technically necessary for basic operation, such as keeping the site secure and functional.

This site keeps a simple, private count of how its own pages and buttons are used — for example how many times the homepage was viewed, or how many people clicked “Buy the Book.” These counts are stored on this website’s own server. No third-party analytics service is used, no cookies are set for this purpose, and no IP addresses, device fingerprints or other identifying details are recorded. The numbers cannot be traced back to any individual visitor.

If you arrive through a link in the Here Be Monsters newsletter, the link carries a short campaign tag. While that browser tab stays open, the site uses your browser’s temporary session storage (not a cookie) to remember that the visit came from the newsletter, and a simple marker so that each visit is counted only once. Both are deleted automatically when you close the tab. They contain no name, email address or identifier and are never shared or used to follow you elsewhere.

matthewflagler.ca contains links to third-party websites, including:

How Long Information Is Kept

Personal information is kept only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, or as required for legal obligations, security, or legitimate recordkeeping.

For newsletter subscribers, information may remain with MailerLite until you unsubscribe or the record is otherwise deleted in accordance with applicable requirements.

Sharing of Information

Personal information is not sold or rented. Information may be shared only with service providers necessary to operate the website and mailing list, such as MailerLite, Lovable, email-delivery infrastructure, and hosting or infrastructure providers, or when disclosure is required by law.

International Processing

Some service providers used by this website may process or store information outside of Canada. As a result, information may be subject to the laws of the jurisdictions where those providers operate.
